I’m crying one tattooed baby tear for Broadway …

Because, for the second time, a John Waters film is being adapted into Broadway musical.

Typically, I couldn’t care less about musicals, but I’m actually excited about Cry-Baby for several reasons.

First, this is evidence that B-more style blue-collar gay kitsch is obviously taking over Manhattan. As a straight man, I have to say that I’m getting tired of all this gay respectability out there with the fab 5 hanging out with Pat Buchanan and whatnot. Not that I’m anti-gay, I’m very very pro-gay; it’s just that I’m very anti-respectability. Respectability is dull.

Second, I’m excited to see who they cast as my all time favorite movie character, Hatchet-face.

And finally, I can’t wait to see how the set directors portray the Enchanted Forest. When I was a little kid I used to visit this glorified playground which was the setting for the finale in Cry-Baby. It has long since been converted into a strip mall. I passed it on Saturday and it made me sad. I’m happy to see it live on in this over-the-top Broadway spectacle.
