Charges of Police Brutality at the closing of the 2004 SoWeBo Festival

June 04, 2004

I can only assume that in years past the Baltimore Police Department have experienced difficulty closing the SoWeBo Festival, and consequently ordered the officers to “agressively” close down this years festival. I’m actually okay with that, the Police a difficult job.

But when you beat a pregnant mother of three to the ground, cause her internal bleeding, and detain her for 28 hours, for (as I have been told by eyewitnesses) trying to protect her babies from you, I think there is a chance you went too far.

When beat another man to the ground for telling you to “chill out”, I think there is a chance you went too far.

When you tazar a man four times for apparantly trying to resist arrest, and 50 eyewitnesses come forward and all say the man DID NOT TRY TO RESIST ARREST, which shockingly contradicts your police report (do police often lie in thier police reports?), I think there is a chance you went too far.

And when you drag an old lady by the hair, AGAIN, for trying to protect babies from you, I think there is a chance you went too far.

I’m glad to hear that the case has been taken up by the interal affairs department.

How far from these people were you when you took these pictures? Whenever I try to get candid shots of people in the crowd I always get caught and stared down.

Yes, I get pleanty of nasty looks. You just have to keep shooting and not care. Never never never never ever ask! If you ask, the picture will suck.

One good trick is to pretend to be zooming in on something else and tilt the camera last minute towards your inteneded subject.

Actually, the hefty guy with the retro orioles cap in the last shot is staring me down. I thought it was so funny that I had to publish.

I also have a monster zoom, but I don't like to use that for people too much. It causes shake if not on a tripod.

Festivals are great though, when people are in large crowds, they don't seem to care if you take there picture.

Blah blah blah. I'll shut up.

I am an attorney representing Jeff Smith, the guy who was tazed by the police at the close of the SOWEBO Festival. He has been charged criminally with assaulting a police officer. Did anyone (to whom I have not yet spoke)witness this actual event and/or the events immediately preceeding it?

If so, please contact me. Jeff's trial is 7/27/04.

Thanks.
