We Don't Need no Stinking $tarbuck$
June 09, 2004
I’ll allow others out there to be concerned with real issues. I prefer get angry when I read articles in the paper about trivial local nonsense. Which is precisely why this article pissed me off.
I’m not going to delve into the more important issues of O’Malley’s successes and failures, or even in his vision for a Baltimore of the future, but the idea of actively trying to bring more Starbucks into the city, instead of working hard to try to keep the chain OUT sickens me.
What boring ass, uninspired chain loving mall shopping twits are you trying to attract to the city? For years now, when hosting visitors from out of the city, I’ve delighted in telling them that sorry, we don’t have Starbucks here. If you want your daily dose of cuppacrappo fuckachino, that you would have to go out to the suburbs.
I’m not originally from Baltimore or its suburbs. I’m originally from the DC area (never could two cities be so close and yet so distant from one another). When I moved here it was like a breath of fresh air. I couldn’t have been happier to get away from those pretentious sanctimonious drones. I found a city that was running its own course, perhaps because the rest of the country had passed us by, but it was so refreshing to live in a place that actually possessed its own character. So why is the mayor trying to erase that character?
What’s next, are they going to replace the Arabbers with Fresh Fields quickie marts?

Starbucks is still taking over, no matter what O'Malley has to say about it. There's three Starbuck's within a few minutes of walking, one in every direction from where I am on the USS Constellation - Light St Pavilion, Barnes and Noble, and the Gallery - and the closest real cafe' I know is the Daily Grind over on Thames Street, and honestly, I find myself grabbing a latte at the chains much more often because of the distance. But, what can you do? Baltimore's becoming a tourist city, and losing it's charm along the way.

I actually like the inner harbor for what it is, a tourism cash cow which brings people in from the outside and a place the locals never actually go to. Lets keep the starbucks down there though. I just don't want to see them start popping up in the neighborhoods.
