A Colossal Piece of Crap
June 15, 2004
I can’t describe to you how much I hate sounding like some modern art bashing ignoranus (Yes, I know it’s misspelled. It was on purpose). I’m a huge proponent of contemporary art. I like to see contemporary art juxtaposed against antiquated architecture in new and interesting ways. I’m happy to see that my city is trying. But, who the fuck approved placing that god awful monstrosity in front of Penn Station!!!
It pains me to sound like some boob who blindly attacks the new and unfamiliar. If I ever say anything half as retarded as “a little kid could do that” or “I could do that” or my favorite of all “That’s not art” being soap boxed by some dumb ass who doesn’t have the first f*ing clue what art is.
When I first looked out my apartment window and saw that thing going up, I assumed that it was some stupid MICA temporary exhibit made of particle board. I was shocked and disgusted to find out that it was a permanent exhibit. I was even more disgusted to find out that the city had paid $750,000 for it!
Who the hell is Jonathan Borofsky? When he designed the statue did he even think to do research into the intended location of the piece. Did he want to dwarf Penn Station. Apparently, people get to hate his work in Denver, Seattle and Fort Worth too.
"Is it too daring for Baltimore?", asked Sun Architecture Critic of Borofsky's sculpture.
Daring?! Daring my ass. It's just, big, dull and ugly.
The location couldn’t be more inappropriate. Businesspersons get off the train, probably already possessing a less than flattering perception of Baltimore, and the very first thing they see is the juvenile, insipid, uninspired aluminum colossus staring them down.
Is there any possibility that this piece of crap could be moved? Melbourne did it, why can't we? I’m proposing the courtyard in the center of Charles Centre.
I'm shocked to find out that thing is permanent. I thought it was promotional thing or another. But how in the world am I ever going to get decent night pics of Penn Station with that eyesore standing in the way? Seriously.
Posted by: bre at June 15, 2004 03:53 PMI love contemporary art too, but what about something by a Baltimore artist at least? And something visually appealing? I agree that it ruins the view of a beautiful building and is a poor waste of city funds, especially if you think of what that money could have done for city schools. I'm all for art, but really...
Posted by: gemini at June 15, 2004 10:24 PMoh god, that is so hideous. it might be one of the ugliest pieces of public art i've ever seen, and it completely clashes with Penn Station, and not in that interesting old vs. new way. having recently visited chicago, which has some amazing pieces of public art by picasso, chagall and miro, i'm even more upset. and this horrible thing is here to stay? wow....
Posted by: nm at June 16, 2004 10:28 AMchicago does have some great sculpture, but we also have several cow statues posed around the city. I happen to know of a couple of certain chicago artists, not students or novices mind you, but old guys, who happened upon one of the unfortunate cows one night and happned to tie a chain around its neck and happned to drag it down a major street without getting caught. sometimes vandalism really is the answer.
Posted by: esf at June 16, 2004 10:46 AMI friend of mine who works urban revitalization actually saw the initial proposals. Apparantly, there was a beautiful more expensive piece proposed for the site. The city decided it was just too expensive (understandable) and then chose with the cheaper ulgier piece. Worst of all, they all knew it was ugly and went ahead with it anyway. I guess waiting for something better to come along was not considered an option.
esf, oh yee of little memory. don't you remember the ugly fishes here and the ugly donkeys and elephants in dc? And I don't think vandalism is really the answer, you silly anarchist. ;) Still, it's good to see you've been lurking around here. Keep me posted on that wedding thang. I'm looking forward to getting drunk and passing out on Don and Denita's front lawn ....naked.
Gemini, I've heard a lot of arguments that they should have commisoned a local artist, even some from the local press. I actually disagree. I think the general idea was to open a new dawn of an international starbucks sipping drone town by displaying permanent public works of art by renowned well known artists. Unfortunatly, they misstepped and I fear we fell on our faces with a $750,000 price tag. I'm scared some local artists would feel pressured to put up a giant blue crab or something, in which case I WOULD BE ALL ABOUT vandalism.
I think we should get some volunteers to drive up to Philly and steal a giant Calder.
Posted by: eebmore at June 16, 2004 12:36 PMHey, I liked the fishes. My company was a sponsor and it was a very big deal around here. It sat in front of our downtown office on S. Charles Street and it now resides outside the cafeteria here at the corporate office. Our fish is made up of sequins and I'm dying to take a mirror shot in front of it but it would result in breaking some kind of company security policy.
Posted by: bre at June 16, 2004 02:10 PMThose fishes were one of the reasons I moved to Baltimore from Michigan. I loved them.
Posted by: epiph at June 17, 2004 07:39 AMThat statue is ugly. A kid could have done that (joking!).
Also, I know someone who owns one of those fishes. Those things looked strange from a far, but when you get close up, you can see that they perfectly horrific.
Posted by: Greg at June 17, 2004 09:58 AMit's sooooo not Baltimore.
Posted by: [cha-chang] at June 17, 2004 01:17 PM You really looked into the "yellow Peril"
good reading.
You know, after reading the clips, Maybe I'm
not so against the original placement,in the square.
I commute Mon-Fri so being assaulted by that fugly thing marks the start and end of my day and never fails to put me in a foul mood. I though perhaps I'd eventually to get used to it or at least learn to ignore it, but the insipid, dumbed down, aggressive inappropriateness of it pisses me off every time I see it. $750,000???? Unbelievable…
Posted by: Cocentricme at July 12, 2004 08:02 AMSeriously, is there anything we can do to get this eyesore removed??? It is aweful. Penn Station doesn't need artwork to improve its appearance or appeal to travelers. Whoever OK'd the $750,000 price tag should have to go around to every public school student and explain why nearly 1 million dollars went to that god aweful statue and not to their education and future. Then he or she should be fired!!
