What BORF Fails to Appreciate is that His Contempt Only Makes Us Stronger
March 04, 2005

As reported in DCist today, there is apparently a tagger in DC running around spray painting very unkind things about our fine city. Mr. DORF, as he likes to refer to himself, feels as though Baltimore is beneath his contempt. This is no surprise to me, as my experience with my (ugh!) hometown is that the single colloquial character trait that bonds them as a people is their condescension.
It’s amazing how a city almost entirely populated by outsiders who have typically lived there for less than four years can so quickly thumb their noses at the indigenous people of the region.
But no matter. DORF is entitled to his opinion. DORF hates Baltimore/eebmore hates DC. It all comes out in the wash, right? I do have to give DCist credit for staying out of the fray. With the exception of their hackneyed use of the tired cliche “Bawlmer, Hon,” the editors expressed no contempt to us neighbors to their north. I’m afraid I cannot say the same thing for their commenters.
But, in the spirit of the “-ist” editorial tone, I’m offering an oak leaf (I meant "olive branch." Where the hell did "oak leaf" come from. Am I an effin Canadian?) of peace. Please stop by the DCist comment section and send DC a friendly hello. Let’s invite them up for some of our indigenous cuisine. Perhaps they can invite us down for some of their, um..., um...., I guess we can just go down and visit the museums on our own. After all, they do belong to the American people, not to the citizens of DC.
Warsh, eebmore. Warsh. Not wash. It all comes out in the warsh.
Posted by: Fool at March 4, 2005 02:43 PMhe. Sadly, I'll be cursed for the rest of my life with my non-baltimore accent. For me, it will always be "wash in the sink" not "warsh in the zink." *wimper*
Posted by: eebmore at March 4, 2005 02:48 PMWho gives a hoot about our elitist self-important neighbors to our south? They are just jealous that they paid $400k for a house smaller than a shoebox.
And, eebmore, don't feel bad. I grew up in Baltimore, and I escaped the accent. And that was while growing up with parentfolk who pronounced "oil" as "uul" and "wash" as "warsh."
Posted by: Jason Thomas at March 4, 2005 03:10 PMWhen I was a littlun' I had a slight bmore accent. But every time I asked for a Kewlka Kewla, my parents would smack me on the back of the head and scream "Coca Cola!"

Posted by: foo at March 4, 2005 05:04 PMAs a DCist writer and Baltimore born and bred, I really appreciate your comments on the Borf post. Not all of who call DC home hate on Charm City. I still love it, but I prefer DC now because of its size, predominantly.
One commenter did bring up a valid point: Peter Angelos is a big blemish for Baltimore PR. Though I'll never stop being an O's fan, I simultaneously hate them now simply because of one arrogant owner's complete mismanagement of one of the few remaining small market teams in Major League Baseball.
Otherwise, I'll continue to be baffled by DC's odd attitude towards Baltimore. Of course, I'm told by long (and I mean LONG) time DC residents that it was precisely the opposite before the rise of the Military Industrial Complex and the growth of DC. For what that's worth.
Posted by: Kanishka at March 5, 2005 05:30 PMDC resident, just stopping by to register my appreciation for baltimore. I love DC, but a lot of things about it bother me. I won't recount them here; they've been noted. I think of the two cities as complementary in a way, but maybe that's b/c I grew up exactly between the two.
I also think that if you grew up in the area, you view DC more through a local lens than a national one. From that perspective, it can be annoying to see how DC's transient professsionals describe it - whether they speak positively or negatively, they often know very little about DC as a city - the local history, cultural contributions, etc.
These are often the folks that bash Baltimore. They have a superficial impression on things like crime, cleanliness, and entertainment, and don't really know anything at all about Baltimore that they didn't see from a Fells Point bar, the Inner Harbor or through the window of a car.
However, same goes for the knee-jerk disdain of DC held by many Baltimoreans. They know its a city that has a lot of overeducated elitists that pay a lot for their homes, and they know about DC's more stale national assets (many of the museums, etc.), but often know little about its neighborhoods, its music & arts scenes, its truly local flavors.
Anyway, I love both cities. It is possible to do that, and I hope people start to realize that. Cripes. Maybe we need some kind of cultural exchange program or something.
