It All Started Out Innocently Enough.

March 21, 2005

*most boring post, ever.

32105page.jpg

A couple of days ago, I tried to import a background image in my template. I rendered correctly in my preferred browser, but not in any of the others. I tried a little of this... I tried a little of that. I began to bend, twist and hammer at the css. I thought to myself, “hey, now would be a good time to try a little changes.”

Next thing I knew, I had parts from my web page scattered all over my living room floor. I have dozens of new .gif’s that are only willing to render in Safari. I’ve bitten of WAY WAY more than I can chew.

If you’re looking at this in Safari, it looks like the html version of a Swatch Watch. If you’re looking at it in any other browser, it looks like a third grader’s christmas web project. The colors are only temporary, intended to make it easy for me to see how different browsers have chosen to pound me in the ass. I’m wishing I came into this with either a carton of cigarettes or some remedial knowledge of css before I started.

Does anyone out there have any idea why Safari is rendering my background .gif’s but the other ones are laughing their asses off at me (both css and main template)? I’ve gone a little too deeply into this redesign process to go back to the old.

And if you’re thinking “Gee, why didn’t you save your old template before you started?”, blow me.

Neon green. That's hot.

Well, my dumb ol' two cents is that there's probably some missing details in your stylesheet. Safari tends to be relaxed and forgiving about some things like # in front of hex colors but not name colors and quotes around .gif URLs, but other browsers are more anal. I'd go back through with a fine-tooth comb, make sure colons and semi-colons are in the right places, all your punctuation is correct, that sort of thing.

P.S. For font-family, "Times New Roman" [and other fonts longer than one word] need to be in quotes.

Y'know, some of us don't steal borrow or even have BROADBAND, we've still got 56K modems. I know, I feel like I'm living in the prehistoric era. Anyway, will all these graphics, your blog takes more time to load than any other blog in the known galaxy. I've read the entry before all the graphics have downloaded, and clicked somewhere else. If this takes any longer to download, I don't think I'll even wait for the entries. Background gifs are just a waste of bandwidth. I suggest you have your photos on other pages that people can click on if they want to and/or have the bandwidth. Usually, if a blog has a lot of photos in it, I'm outta there before you can say "300K". I just don't have that kind of patience. You're not Ansel Adams or anything, y'know.

Raunter, I've been trying to set it up so that, like you said, the content of the entries can still be read if one's modem is still working on the graphics. It's why all the heavy graphics are on the right.

With that said, I hear you. If I ever gain the skilz, I may build a skin for 56k modems. And dai ain't no pictures on the front page; just gif's of my nose and shit.
