Comic relief

While being interviewed on NPR’s “Marketplace” last night, former First Lady Barbara Bush shared her views on the possible “scary” serendipitous outcome of all this hurricane business.
After touring the Houston Astrodome with former Presidents George H.W.Bush and Bill Clinton, along with Senators Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama, on the subject of the surge of evacuees/refugees to Houston, Mrs. Bush said:
“Almost everyone I’ve talked to says we're going to move to Houston.” (okay... believable and somehow sweet.)
But then she added:
“What I’m hearing which is sort of scary is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality."And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this (she chuckles slightly) is working very well for them.”
*pause*....................................
BWHAHAHAHAHA!
Oh, come on, that’s funny. I don’t care if you’re a lefty or a righty. You can either laugh with her or at her. That’s an equal opportunity gut splitter.
I have an image in my head of one of those moments when you are trapped in a conversation on a subject you know absolutely nothing about with a group of professionals, and you uncomfortably try to contribute to the conversation, only to let off a verbal ass blast that makes everyone squirm uncomfortably before someone salvages the situation by changing the subject. Or perhaps that’s one of those moments where a mother treats every one of their child’s turds as though they are a nugget of gold bullion? Or maybe it’s like having an old racist aunt at the Thanksgiving table who insists on sharing how her dear late husband told her the army was a great place to be before Truman made him serve with the coloreds.
Regardless of what possessed that poor woman to open her hole, that is some seriously hilarious Marie Antoinette shit right there.
In all fairness, rich people are crazy and old people are crazy and famous people are crazy -- and when you're Barbara Bush, hence a rich, famous, old person, you're really fuckin' crazy.
Posted by: Malnurtured Snay at September 6, 2005 03:01 AMthat IS some funny shit!
you do have to feel a bit sorry for the Texas taxpayers, though.
Posted by: Neckbone at September 7, 2005 07:47 AMThat Texan hospitality of the basic necessities for survival is just knocking everybody's socks off. They came for the potable water and stayed for the line dancing. I do declare!
Posted by: Cara at September 7, 2005 08:44 PMRich women, hurricanes and soundbites don't mix. This ranks right up there with Theresa Heinz Kerry (or is it just Heinz again?) and her 'let them be naked' comment. This was after hurricane Charley I believe? (or Ivan?)
Posted by: PsychoPhil at September 7, 2005 10:08 PMYes. She was definitely a crutch to the kerry campaign. I cannot believe the DNC thought it was a good idea for her speak in half a dozen languages at the convention. Flushed centrist votes right down the toilet.
Not familiar with the quote... googled it and only came across message boards. I won’t read those, left or right.
Also, I’ve been trying like hell to find a media reference to the school bus incident. So far I’ve only found blogger references. Nothing more solid. Would you know where I could find such a reference? Not trying to be snotty. I just want to read a media reference.
I have been reading lots of despicable bullshit from the left for the past week... punching on the ropes and such. I’ve kept quiet about my revulsion. Every time I was about to write something about the despicable crap, some ones would reiterate the bullshit who would think I was writing about their words personally.
The funny thing is, when I posted this, only Editor & Publisher had reported the incident. When I woke up the next morning, the story was all over the fucking place. Now that the story has become so commonplace, this post gets on every one of my nerves. Oh well, such is life when you post about current events I guess.
Don’t get the wrong idea, I still think you righties are completely full of crap. ;)
Posted by: eebmore at September 7, 2005 11:08 PMalso, I thought I was being original when I compared her to Marie Antoinette. sure enough, all the media sources made the same comparison. Damn them for tapping into the same cultural references as me.
Posted by: eebmore at September 7, 2005 11:12 PMI blogged about it when I heard it (http://www.psychophil.com/weblog/?p=480) and had a link to the Yahoo news story as well. Unfortunately, the Yahoo link has expired.
Hmmm, I did find this clip from the Boston Herald. You have to pay to read the article but the headline says it all.

Posted by: PsychoPhil at September 8, 2005 12:49 AMthanks, but not that one. the hundreds of school buses that were left unused story.
Posted by: eebmore at September 8, 2005 12:58 AMActually I was responding to your 'not familier with the quote' line.
As for the buses, the only reference I can find after a quick search is Bill O'Reilly (one step above blogger, one below reporter):

Will look for better reference in the morning. After that sleep thing.
Posted by: PsychoPhil at September 8, 2005 01:37 AMI've checked the conservative news sources. The wall street journal had something on 9-6, but the article isn't free (they really have to change that policy), and found this article in the Washington Times:
http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20050907-101851-4549r.htm
Quoting a high-ranking source in the Department of Homeland Security, who unfortunately, asked to not be identified.
Posted by: eebmore at September 8, 2005 11:22 AMThere's a story at msnbc.com about three guys in a Sonotra who drove down from Duke into the area around the civic center and gave people rides up to Baton Rouge. They made two or three trips, had no trouble filling their gas tank and made a video of a line of empty school buses driving out of the New Orleans area. The National Guard finally put a stop to their fun.
