Genetic Geekout

May 11, 2006

I’ve really been digging The Genographic Project lately. Through advances in the study of Y-chromosomal haplogroups and mitochondrial DNA, scientists are gaining fascinating new insights into the migration patterns of man since prior to the dawn of civilization to the present day, and gaining a better understanding of the relationships of various indigenous peeps the world over. It’s all over my head, but it’s still interesting to me, nonetheless. Check out the very cool interactive homepage here.

It’s very cool, how, for a hundred bucks, they’ll send you a DNA sample kit which you mail in, enabling you to track your own ancestry, via the internet, all the way back to sub-Saharan africa, if you believe in all that evolution crap.

I’m personally not going to be sending mine in, as my Y-chromosomal haplogroups are theoretically the same as this guy’s, and unless some momma on my daddy's daddy's daddy's line was lifting her ass in the air for someone she shouldn’t have been, my Y-chromosomal haplogroups should be the same as most people living here. And as I know my momma’s momma’s momma came from here, unless one of these three ladies actually kidnapped her children, my mitochondrial DNA should theoretically be the same as many people living in Kilkenny. As interesting as these divergent results may be, I’m not willing to part with a hundred bucks just to find out that my very close maternal ancestors are kidnappers or that some female ancestor on my paternal line was a whore. Otherwise, I can find the same results for free by reading what has already been learned about the DNA of modern day Celts, or maybe also Saxons or Normans, but most likely just different Celts, or at least that’s what the DNA studies have found... or something. I don’t know, like I said, it’s all really over my head.

From what TFG tells me about yo' momma, I'd say $100 could turn up some interesting shit!

good one! I looove when the ladies get into the spirit of the yo' mamma smack talk.

Unfortunatly, that's not how mitochondrial DNA tracking works. Even if my mom was a ho (not sayin' she is. Hi Mom!) the genetic markers of my momma's hoin' would not show up on my mitochondrial DNA. Now, if my Y-chromosomal turned out not to be my supposed dad's, then you would be right. For better or for worse, many many other physical markers indicate that my mom was my dad's baby momma, as i inherited his momma's big injun' ham and cheese nose, and as he had no brothers, if my momma was hoin', it did not result in my conception.

(i bet she's loving reading this 3 days before momma's day.)

My wife went to an all-girls Orthodox Jewish high school. One day, one of their secular teachers (could have been history or science) mentioned that those of them with blond hair were probably the result of a rape sometime many generations ago. Several girls proceeded to break down in tears. Now, I would have paid $100 to see that!

greg, the first time I heard of y-chromosomal haplogroups was in an article written by a rabbi about the Lemba Kohanim in southern africa. When the genetic studies came in that showed the Lemba were definately descended from Yemeni Jews, and their Kohanim were definately descended from a chromosomal Aaron (at a much higher rate than what is typically found in paternal parentage - given what is considered the standard probability of raping and whoring), the rabbi was estatic that the study found jewish women were statistically less slutty than their non-jewish counterparts.

genetics rock.

Why in the name of God would you tell your mother about this blog? Until now, I seriously didn't think that she read it. For the record, I was refering to the figurative Mrs. Eebmore when I made those previous comments.

$100 to provide a DNA sample is outrageous, considering the places that I frequent pay me to provide DNA samples and they even throw in bonus reading material.

My parent's read my blog too. Sigh. They've said more than once that I should be more "discrete". Good God, I'm a forty something woman. They're lucky I'm as discrete as I am!! I have one of the squeakiest clean blogs going for Christ's sake. I need to start another blog just to post all the stuff I have to leave out for "discretion's sake".
I'll be on the main pole at the Hustler Club this weekend. Three shows a night. My mom doesn't read your blog.

Obvously, I do not come from a family of Puritans (whoops, actually, according to a Hyperlink above, I do). Despite popular opinion, my mother is actually a grown up, and I am as well. She can handle the masturbatory references. I don't remember how she found out about this page, but she did, and told all her relatives about it as well. Basically, every post I write is designed to make her regret telling her relatives about it. But truth be told, I don't think any of them bother reading it anyway.

tfg, your extra fingers don't scare them away at the donation bank?

Posted by: eebmore at May 12, 2006 11:24 AM

The extra fingers don't bug them as much as the third nipple. Even so, they really don't say much because what I can't give them in quality, I make up in quantity. Like any other business, volume is what it's all about.
