Two BIG Internet Rumors... (one debunked)

November 28, 2006

Update: According to D’S C, the rumors about season six turns out to be apparently false.

Both via Baltimore Crime...

According to d’s c, supposedly:

a) The Wire is being renewed for a sixth season (? and !)*

b) Plans are in the works for a new John Waters movie, this time about Christmas Street on 34th Street.**

* I’ve got some seriously ambivalent feelings about this. I respect Simon’s insistence that the show is intended to have a five season story arc, but it isn’t like he hasn't lied before (like, oh, I dunno, him STILL insisting that Carcetti isn’t based on O’Malley. I was willing to roll my eyes and chuckle over this instance during the third season, but with the storylines of season four - Carcetti champing at the bit for the Governer's office before his mayoral chair is even warm, his brewing battle with the Dixon character who I suppose isn’t Dixon at all either, and especially him in episode 49 sitting on a certain wood bench in a certain building being humiliated while waiting for a meeting with a certain elected official over a certain fiscal issue - the denials are becoming a little bit insulting. Sorry for the vague mini-spoiler on episode 49, which technically hasn’t aired yet. I saw the episode On Demand at a friend's place last night.) I would hate to see the show unnecessarily live on past its mission and drift into irrelevancy and go Sopranos on our ass.

At the same time, MORE FUCKING WIRE!!! Woo-Hoo!

** This one sounds like it has promise. Let us pray for Christmas that it is better than A Dirty Shame and a thousand times better than Cecil B. Demented. I’m hoping for a level of quality somewhere in the neighborhood of Pecker. But, please, no more Hasselhoffs pooping out of airplanes! As a friend of mine said, “Wouldn’t it have been a better ending if the tripod just went limp, the camera pointing towards the pavement, with a voice over of Waters saying ‘Why the hell do I even bother anymore.’” See my conserns on point a.

A Dirty Shame and Cecil B Demented weren't that bad. Anyway John Waters has the right to make schlock in order to keep himself flush with hairless boy-toys, doesn't he?

A Dirty Shame wasn't that bad. It certainly wasn't great, and had a handful of scenes that were wonderful, matched, unfortunately, with an equal number of scenes that were so lame that I winced.

Cecil B Demented was so awful that Waters should be grateful that one cannot have his or her director's license revoked, as afterwards he would have been forced to make donkey porn movies in Mexico for a living... which I suppose wouldn’t be too far off the mark for him.

Pecker, on the other hand, was awesome. Even when it was bad, I loved it.

Also, it is my understanding that Waters is not a fan of hairless boy toys, but rather blue collar twentysomething street trade. There is hope for you yet! Pack your bags, you have a potential sugardaddy... for about 3 hours.

Please tell me the Wire rumor is true. I heard the Greeks are coming back for the fifth season (someone in Highlandtown is cheering) Carcetti is totally O'Malley...even the haircut is eerily similar. Yes, I can live for Sundays for another year!!!!!

oooo.... a little "insider" information that I can perhaps throw into the mix. Last month, the actor who plays "THE GREEK" was in Baltimore. I saws him with my own two eyes. Confirmed sighting. I was hoping that meant there was a possibility of more of the Greeks in season five. From what you say, it looks like an affirmative.

As for the rumors for season six, I'm really not sure if they are true. The blog from which I recieved the information later clarified that an industry insider had told her that HBO wants to make a sixth season*, but I haven't heard any rumors as to David Simon's response. Part of me fears that continuing for a six season would be a sell-out move. Not that it can't work, of course, but the thought of the quality slipping is terrifying to me. At the same time, more Wire!

*Not to read too much into her possible source, but she is going to be on a cast members radio show later this week.

IMO, it’s always best to leave comments open. You may get some obnoxious comments; actually, you eventually WILL receive some obnoxious comments. You just gotta let those roll of your back. “Blog owner approval” pretty much kills all interaction.
